  • A Century at Edison

One of the traditions within the Edison Elementary is on the 100th day of school, students and teachers dress up in old-fashioned clothing. This year’s 100th day was a bit unique, however, because it happened to be the 100th day of school, during the 100th anniversary of the original building. So to celebrate, the school extended the normal 100th day celebrations to the entire secondary and community.

Students and teachers throughout, dressed up as if it were the 1920’s, ate lunch that would have been normal for that time period, including hand shaken butter! The school was full of items on display from the early 1900s, including an old carriage, a butter churn, a washboard, a typewriter, among other things. We would like to thank all those who kindly allowed their items to be displayed! The students and community played games from the 1920s such as shuffleboard, dominoes, checkers. A game of baseball was even played in the gymnasium.

To highlight the day, a panel of Edison graduates from the community shared their experiences with the students of what life at Edison was like back in the day. They reminisced about not having running water, having to go out behind the school to the outhouse, and playing basketball on a dirt court. A huge thank you goes out to those who spoke. It was very kind of you to share your experience with us.

A century is a long time, and Edison school has been a staple of this community even before the original building was built 100 years ago. It's important to learn about and celebrate its history with its community, and to reminisce about how much things have changed. Because no matter how much things have changed in the last century,  how much things will change in the future, the one thing that will never change, is this community and its support of this great school. Thank you!
