MISSION STATEMENT: To develop advanced academic language to culturally and linguistically diverse students through high quality standards, assessments, and research.
The English Language Learner Department at Edison School serves students that have a been identified as having a home language other than English. A Home Language Survey is sent to all students every school year. This determines if a child has another language spoken at home other than English. If so, the student is given a screener within 30 days of enrollment to determine their level of proficiency in English in four different domains: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. A parent acceptance letter of services is then sent out, and a parent can either accept or deny services for their child.
Every Spring, all identified English Language Learner students are given a standardized test that measures their proficiency levels in the four domains. This test is taken locally with the ELL teacher. The tests are sent to be scored, and the school receives these scores in April.
If you have any questions or concerns about your child's language acquisition call 719-478-2125.
