Telecomputing – Student Acceptable Use Agreement

 

The smooth operation of the Edison telecomputing network, such as but not limited to the Internet and e-mail, relies upon end users adhering to established standards of proper conduct.  The following guidelines, extracted from Policy JS, are provided to define the responsibilities of a telecomputing user.  In general, this requires efficient ethical, and legal utilization of telecomputing resources.  If an Edison School District 54JT user violates any of these provisions, the user is responsible for this violation and his or her access to the Edison network or computer resources may be denied. 

 

USE OF TELECOMPUTING RESOURCES IS A PRIVILEGE, NOT A RIGHT

 

1.      Use of telecomputing resources must be supportive of educational objectives and be consistent with the mission and curriculum of the district.

2.      Users must abide by local, state, and federal laws, such as but not limited to the Copyright Law, licensing laws, privacy laws, and school board policies and regulations, as well as District and school-based guidelines.

3.      No student shall access, create, transmit, retransmit or forward material or information:

a.      that promotes violence or advocates destruction of property

b.      that is not related to district objectives

c.      that contains pornographic, obscene or other sexually-oriented materials

d.      that harasses, threatens, demeans, or promotes violence or hatred against another person or persons with regard to race, sex, religion, national origin, age, marital status, disability or handicap

e.      for personal profit, financial gain, advertising, or political purpose

f.        that plagiarizes the work of another without express consent

g.      that uses offensive or profane language likely to offend others

h.      that is knowingly false or could be intended to harm reputations

i.        in violation of any law, not limited to copyrighted material

j.         that accesses fee services without specific written permission

4.      No student shall attempt to gain unauthorized access or attempt to bypass the computer system.

5.      Students will only access their own telecommunicating account.  They will maintain the confidentiality of passwords.  The will not use another individual’s Internet account without written permission

6.      No student shall attempt to modify current settings on school computers.

7.      No student shall access kaza or similar programs on school computers.

8.      Students may not download software or install personal software on school computers.

9.      Students will be held legally responsible for vandalism to school computers to include damage, modification, abuse or network disruption.  This includes the introduction of computer viruses and use of encryption software.

10. Students will not use school computers for personal e-mail or instant messaging.

11. Students will not spread untruths about a person that lowers the affected. individual in the eyes of the community reading the message.

12. Students will report inappropriate material found on any school computer.

13. Students will only use computers under the supervision of a teacher.

14. Students acknowledge that Edison School District is not responsible for the actions of any user nor the character or inaccuracy of any information accessed.

15. Students understand that telecomputing information, in general, is not held confidential.

 

I have read, understand and will abide by the district’ policy on Student use of the Internet and Electronic Communications.  Should I commit any violation or in any way misuse my access to the school’s computers or computer system, including use of the Internet and electronic communications, I understand and agree that my access privileges may be revoked and disciplinary and/or other legal action may be taken.

 

 

If I am 18 years or older, I hereby release Edison School District 54JT from all costs, claims, damages or losses resulting from my use of district computers and computer systems, including use of the Internet and electronic communications, including but not limited to any user fees or charges incurred through the purchase of goods or services.

 

 

 

Your signature on the Acceptable Use Agreement is binding and indicates that you understand the district policy on Student Use of the Internet and Electronic Communications and understand its significance.
